SunPower system winner gifts solar to her son

SunPower system winner gifts solar to her sonEwa Fietkiewicz is gifting the $25,000 rooftop solar system she won in the SunPower Solar Discovery contest to her son Jakub.

Ewa said she learned about the contest from her son in the first place.

“He came across the contest info in June while researching solar power options to reduce his home’s rising electricity bills,” Ewa wrote in an e-mail. “I was excited to learn that Hawaiian Airlines was offering a trip to Hawaii as a prize, so I started to play the game.”

The game was downloaded onto computers and smart phones in all 50 states and attracted players between the ages of 18 and 40, according to a release from SunPower.

Players answered questions about the history of solar, notable SunPower installations, solar facts and solar news. Each correct answer earned the player points. The points earned badges, and SunPower issued more than 8,300 electronic badges for players to display on their facebook pages.

During the campaign, the number of people who “liked” SunPower on facebook increased by 246 percent, according to the SunPower release.

Ewa answered 209 questions and collected all of the available bonus points.

“I had to do a significant amount of online research over the course of the game,” Ewa wrote. “I learned about the history of solar technology, solar power facts, and notable solar power achievements and installations. I work at a university library by day, and I am confident that the research skills required for my occupation gave me an edge in this competition.”

She said she decided to give the system to her son because he’s been concerned about his growing energy bill, which is what drove him to research solar and find the contest in the beginning.

“When I heard I was the grand prize winner, I instantly thought of Jakub and how a high-efficiency SunPower solar power system would significantly reduce his family’s electricity bills, making his life easier,” Ewa wrote.

Jakub is installing a 7.65-kilowatt system, which is larger than the one Ewa won. He decided to increase the size of the system so he could cover 100 percent of his electric bill with the solar installation, Ewa wrote.
