Voltaic introduces solar-powered iPad charger

Voltaic introduces solar-powered iPad chargerIt’s a solar-powered go for your gizmos. Voltaic recently introduced its new Spark solar-powered charger and case for iPads and other table devices like the Samsung Galaxy tablet.

The device is capable of providing one-hour of video playback on an iPad for every hour it’s in the sun, according to Voltaic Chief Operating Officer Jeff Crystal.

“Ten hours in the sun will fully charge the iPad,” he said.

The device also contains a battery pack, which can fully charge an iPad in about three and a half hours, Crystal said. The 8-watt Bosch monocrystalline photovoltaic panel charges the lithium polymer battery in the case.

“All our products operate on the same principle. Solar charges the battery; the battery charges your device. Most of our customers will charge the battery in the sun and their device at night,” Crystal said. That way, the battery conditions the power output of the photovoltaic panel and provides clean power for the devices.

“What we do on the battery is we have two ports,” Crystal said. One port is for smaller devices, like smartphones or camera batteries. “The second port is a high-powered port. It has two amps, which will charge it [i.e., the iPad] four times as fast as off your computer.”

The $299 case isn’t cheap, but it’s targeted toward a certain set of people, Crystal said.

“It’s mainly for people who are traveling aggressively,” he said. “For that group of people, this is very useful. If you’re traveling a lot and away from the grid, this is very helpful.”

Sales of the recently introduced device are moving. The company was sold out of a limited number of the devices within three to four days, he said. It won’t start shipping new orders until July 7, the company said.

Voltaic also offers case/chargers for other electronic devices, including laptops via solar-powered messenger bags and other devices like backpacks with integrated solar panels.

Thus far, reaction to the company’s offerings has been good, according to Crystal.

“We’re very happy with our performance, they’re niche products, not for everyone,” he said. Still, the company’s sales are up roughly 50 percent over last year’s, he said.
