SolarWorld taking advantage of Massachusetts’ growing solar market

SolarWorld taking advantage of Massachusetts’ growing solar market SolarWorld is benefiting from Massachusetts’ fast-growing solar market.

“In the last year or two we have seen several significant projects in the state,” said SolarWorld spokeswoman Devon Chichoski.

The company has installed more than 7 megawatts of solar power in Massachusetts recently, she said.

Among those projects is the recently completed 2-megawatt ground-mounted array for Berkshire School, a private boarding school in Sheffield, Mass.

The installation is the largest at any private school in New England and is expected to produce enough electricity to provide about 45 percent of the campus’ power needs, according to a release from SolarWorld.

The state is one of the fastest growth locations for SolarWorld and for the solar industry in general.

“There has been significant legislation passed in the state that is driving this,” Chichoski said.

Massachusetts, which is burdened with some of the country’s highest energy costs, implemented a renewable energy portfolio standard in 2010. The standard requires the state’s biggest utility company, Bay State, to install 400 megawatts of solar power generation by 2020. The legislature also passed regulations that allow the trading of solar renewable energy credits, which has stimulated growth in the industry.

That legislation cleared the way for companies like SolarWorld to do business in the state.

SolarWorld, which is based in Oregon, has installed solar arrays for several commercial operations, including Spire Corp and BJs Wholesale Club. BJ’s had the company install a total of 652 kilowatts on several of its big box locations. All together, the company has installed 1.6 megawatts in Massachusetts since the portfolio standard passed last year.

The company’s largest and most significant installation is a 4.5-MW system currently under construction in Holyoke, Mass., Chichoski said. Constellation Energy is building that one and will own and operate it.
