South Carolina will soon be home to a solar technology training school for the renewable energy company Solar Energy Initiatives. A subsidiary company, Solar EOS, will open the Solar Installation School, and this school will be part of the South Carolina Workforce Investment's list of Eligible Training Providers and will offer both classroom instruction, in the theoretical aspects of solar power, as well as instructional training in installing solar panels and other solar energy equipment.

Solar EOS has designed the Solar Installation School with the goal of ensuring that students have a competitive advantage with technical knowledge and hands-on skills. To this end, classroom instruction includes lessons in sustainability, green building strategies, and a working knowledge of the LEED Green Building Rating System, a means of evaluating energy efficiency. The training is incorporated into an intensive 200 hours of class time over eight weeks, including 30 hours of hands-on training with solar thermal and solar photovoltaic equipment.

The president of Solar EOS, Ellen Leroy-Reed has stated she expects over 200 prospective solar installers to be trained in the program during the first year. The technical school meshes nicely with South Carolina's adherence to the Workforce Investment act, a federal program intended to revitalized local economies by creating work capable of filling higher-paying positions that require certain specific skill sets.

In South Carolina, the Department of Employment's Workforce Division oversees 12 Workforce Investment locations that, among other duties, assist job-seekers in acquiring specialized training from places such as the Solar Installation School.

South Carolina government officials have expressed confidence that the school's construction will help to revitalize the economy, not only by training skilled laborers that stand to be paid well, but also through the creation of other green jobs as renewable-energy programs gain popularity.
