Westinghouse Solar to supply PV for new Lennar homes in Texas

Westinghouse Solar to supply PV for new Lennar homes in TexasWestinghouse Solar, Inc.’s (Nasdaq:WEST) AC photovoltaic (PV) modules will be included on new “Everything’s Included” Lennar homes being developed in Texas. The arrays will be designed to meet the power needs of the planned homes with the price of the panels built into the base price of the homes.

Lennar is the latest in a number of national homebuilders to include a solar array as standard on its new homes under an agreement with a solar manufacturer.

Other companies like KB Homes, Del Webb and Meritage Homes are including solar as a standard features on certain new homes as well.

“As they’re building out these new communities. They’re making solar part of their ‘Everything’s Included’ package. They’re offering energy efficiency solutions for the homebuyer,” said Westinghouse Solar Vice President of Marketing Gary Mull.

Solar is a feature that more potential homebuyers are showing interest in to help them save money in the long term.

The agreement with Lennar is a multi-year agreement, which for now is covering certain communities under development in Texas, according to a press release. Mull could not disclose how many homes would have the Westinghouse Solar systems installed at press time.

Westinghouse Solar made its photovoltaic systems as plug-and-play as possible, including Enphase microinverters and racking and mounting as part of its modules.

“Our solution has about 80 percent less parts than standard solar systems,” Mull said.

The reduction in parts simplifies the solar installation process.

“The installation process requires so little unique expertise,” he said. “They can install the solar without having to use a specific solar engineer.”

The reduction in additional laborers needed to install the system helps reduce its cost, according to Mull. Between that and production-home models, the cost of solar can be further reduced, since the arrays can be standardized for the different home models.

This is Westinghouse Solar’s first such relationship with a national homebuilder on this scale.

“We were doing installations in the past through a variety of homebuilding environments, Habitat for Humanity, things of that nature,” Mull said. “We’ve had relationships with small custom homebuilders in the past. This is the first [under] a program we’ve launched for the new home production market.”
