Many commercial companies have advertised their connections with some of these organizations to the ground in Haiti, promising to donate percentages of their profits to bring light to Haiti. Those promotions have hit a fever pitch as the holidays and the anniversary of the earthquake approach.

The United Nations Secretary General called for $11.5 billion in funds to rebuild Haiti over the next decade, with world leaders calling for special emphasis to be placed on clean energy development there.

Each of these projects brings power to a country, the poorest in the world, which has lived largely in the dark for most of its life.

Fortunately a legion of nonprofits is geared up and ready for the challenge.

"We love to go in and bring power to where there has been none," Freling said.
