PeakSolar installs 50kW at jet center

PeakSolarPeakSolar.com is growing across the country and just completed a 50-megawatt solar installation at a Florida airfield.

The solar installation at the Stuart Jet Center at Witham Field in Stuart, Fla. Will supply about a tenth of the center’s energy needs with about 240 solar panels on the roof of one airplane hangar.

“That leaves plenty of room to grow,” said JR Bucher, spokesman for PeakSolar.

The project represents a geographic expansion for the company, which supplies solar photovoltaic components, solar kits and turnkey solar PV systems for residential, commercial and industrial applications.

While the company is a national supplier, its biggest and most comprehensive solar development projects have been more concentrated, Bucher said.

“We’ve done solar farms up in Pennsylvania, which have about 800 solar panels,” Bucher said. “Our company has also done hundreds of residential systems in California and New Jersey.”

But a big project like this one in Florida represents new territory. The market in Florida might be right for larger commercial solar installations as the price of power there is high.

“Any system where the energy price is at 19 cents per kilowatt hour or larger will have a payback period of five to seven years,” Bucher said.

And that is the payback period for the Jet Center installation.

The short return on investment makes solar installations more and more attractive in different areas throughout the country, Bucher said.

Additionally, airports and air centers are increasingly turning to solar and other renewable energy sources to offset their environmental impacts.

The Jet Center project uses 240 Canadian Solar panels. They were installed at the center with help from Coronado Homes.

While this is the first solar installation at the center, administrators are actively planning for additional solar projects, according to a release from PeakSolar.
