iPhone 4 integrated solar charger now available in stores

Attention iPhone 4 users: Now you can text and surf the web and never have to plug your phone in again.

Genesis Electronics is now offering its G-1500 solar charger, previously only available on the Internet, into a real store. The new push to offer the charger at a retail outlet was announced yesterday.

The G-1500 combines solar technology and traditional charging capabilities and snaps onto the iPhone 4 like the back panel of a case. After the company noticed the demand for the smart charger, it decided to pursue a new marketing campaign.

Genesis is taking its time, though. You won’t find the G-1500 at a Best Buy near you, yet. The solar-powered iPhone charger will only be available at an AT&T retail location in New York State, but the company hopes that this first step will grow into a full-scale expansion into other retail markets.

“The move toward a physical in-store presence to complement our online sales is a major component of our overall marketing strategy and a very exciting milestone," said Ed Dillon, CEO of Genesis Electronics Group, in a company press release. "We will continue to implement and test all available marketing and sales approaches for the G-1500, as well as for all other innovative solar-powered product releases that are in our development pipeline.”

Genesis, a California-based technology company, is working on a new solar-charging device called the SunBlazer, or G-2000, for the Apple iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4G and iPod. Like the G-1500, this small solar panel, coupled with an ion battery, looks like the back panel of an iPhone. It is made to snap on the back of a cell phone. But the company still hasn’t announced a date for retail release. In fact, the company announced the technology almost a year ago, and many consumers were expecting the product would be available by summer 2010.

But don’t hold your breath. Genesis’ G-1500 is only in one store so far. The company is still testing the waters, so to speak.

"The introduction of the G-1500 directly to consumers through an AT&T store is an exceptionally important and timely step for Genesis Electronics Group,” said Raymond F. Purdon, Genesis' Chairman, in the company release. “Well over a million iPhone 4s sold in just the first few days of introduction, and the popular product continues to move strongly at retail. The G-1500 is a needed accessory to the power-hungry iPhone 4, so marketing it right alongside the iPhone 4 should prove to be a very successful sales methodology.”
