Nevada fire did not harm solar plant, despite reports

Inaccurate news spread yesterday afternoon that a fire at a power plant in Nevada had sparked in its solar generation facility and damaged it.

There was a fire at Sempra Generation’s Eldorado Energy Station near Boulder City, Nev., said Scott Crider, Sempra spokesman.

The fire broke out in the 480-megawatt gas-powered generation station while it was temporarily shut down for maintenance. The gas-powered station did sustain some damage and crews are working to get it cleaned up as quickly as possible, Crider said.
But the 10-megawatt solar facility adjacent to the gas power plant was not harmed in the fire and is still online.

“There was no impact to the solar facility,” Crider said. “I think people were confused because there’s a lot of solar all around here.”

The inaccurate news was first reported by a news web site and then spread from there throughout the day.

“I’ve putting the genie back in the bottle all day on that,” Crider said.
