Cape Fear’s solar tour sees success

The Cape Fear Green Building Alliance Solar & Green Building Tour, held by the Cape Fear Green Building Alliance in North Carolina this past Saturday, helped nearly 100 people see the green.

The tour was held as part of the American Solar Energy Society’s ASES National Solar Tour to show people across the country the benefits of making their homes more sustainable by adding solar and energy-efficiency to their homes.

“Everything went smoothly; we had a good number of day-of sales, and the media push helped us out,” said event coordinator Nick Lauretta. “This year we had right around 90 attendees. We had a really good turnout, I was really happy.” Last year, he added, they had 40 people attend.

The 2010 tour featured seven stops.

“Three residences, 3 businesses and 1 school,” he said. Overall, it was the sixth time that the organization held the annual event, and the first time it offered a guided tour, according to Lauratta.

Tickets for the tour, whether guided or self-guided, were $12 per person for Alliance members and $15 for non-members. Children were free on the self-guided tour, but because of limited seating, had to pay for the guided bus tour. Tickets to the event were sold to fund the event’s promotion and to serve a fundraiser for the organization, Lauretta said.

The local organization is holding multiple events related to solar, according to Lauretta.

Next up is the 2010 Green Living and Conference and Expo, which will be held on Oct. 13.

“We used to do it on the same day [as the solar tour], but it was just too much,” Lauretta said.

The Cape Fear event was one of more than 700 solar events being held across the nation between now and mid-October as part of the National Solar tour, which offered attendees real-life applications of solar power, including photovoltaics, passive solar design, solar hot water, solar space heating, green building practices, and more.
