500 Megawatt California Solar Project

The California Utility Commission gave approval for Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG & E) to install a new solar program with up to 500 megawatts of solar photovoltaic panels.  The program will generate enough power to supply electricity to approximately 150,000 homes.  “We applaud the CPUC’S decision to approve this important renewable energy initiative and look forward to beginning its implementation,” said Steve Malnight, the utility’s vice president for renewable energy.  This program will provide our customers with timely access to solar power and create local benefits including green jobs for the communities we serve.”

California Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG & E) provides natural gas and electric service to about 15 million people in northern and central California.  It is one of the largest combination natural gas and electric utilities in the U.S.  The company is regulated by the California Public Utilities Commission.  California has required its utilities to get 20% of its electricity from alternative sources such as solar.  California’s long-term goal is to increase the electricity generated from renewable resources to 33% by 2020.
