There are many benefits to having your very own solar system working tirelessly each day to supply you with clean and free energy from the sun. What's that?  Skip to the money part? Okay.
Although a solar system does have an upfront cost, the energy you get out of it is worth more.  How much more?  To put it simply, every dollar you spend on solar can save you $5 to $10 you would otherwise pay your electric company.  The more expensive your electicity is the more you save.

In the state of California a significant portion of our electricity is made from clean energy sources such as hydro, wind, and solar.  The bad news is that more than half of the power we use daily still comes from sources that can cause harm to our planet and to our health.  Solar electricity generated at the point of use is the cleanest form of energy available.  Over its life a typical home solar system will prevent the release of over 200 tons of green house gases and other harmful pollutants.  You would need to car pool half a million miles to accomplish the same thing. What about the manufacturing and shipping of solar panels, isn't that bad for the environment?  Good question, there is a carbon footprint associated with making panels and getting them to your roof.  A solar system in California will need to work for about 18 months before it has produced enough clean energy to offset the unclean energy it was born from. This leaves the remaining 25 years carbon negative. Think of it this way, we can use 5 gallons of petroleum to make and deliver a single solar panel that will spend every day of the next 30 years riddled with guilt and working to make it up to us.  Or... we can use 5 gallons of petroleum to make 3 gallons of gasoline and we all know what that gets us... one more trip to visit the in-laws.
